Age UK and Government statistics highlight that a significant number of those over state retirement age and on low incomes who may be eligible to do so, are not claiming Pension Credit.  As such, they may be missing out on extra income, plus a number of free services or other benefits, and have to meet such expenses from their low income. For example, the further benefits that could be available to those receiving Pension Credit include:

·       Free NHS dental treatment.

·       Help towards the cost of glasses.

·       Help towards transport to hospital.

·       A Cold Weather Payment of £25 in relevant circumstances.

·       Housing Benefit to help towards paying rent.

·       Help with housing costs, or a loan to help with mortgage interest payments.

·       Help with Council Tax.

·       If a carer for someone, they may get an extra weekly amount known as Carer Addition.

·       If disabled, they may get an extra weekly amount known as Severe Disability Addition.

·       If aged over 75, they could get a free TV licence.

We are seeking your support in helping to raise awareness of the issue in your community of the potential availability of Pension Credit, and the further benefits they may be entitled to receive, thereby maximising their available income.  This could make a real difference to many pensioners, and improve their lives.

Please see below information that could be circulated via your community online activity; via any newsletter or other publication that you have access to; as hand-outs  to a meeting you attend etc.  We will be directing anyone who wishes to make a claim to the Pension Credit Claim Line on 0800 99 1234 - or, for further advice, to Citizens Advice Adviceline on 03444 111 444.
